Flying With Kids: The Things I Stopped Worrying About (After 150+ Flights)
There are a lot of things I used to stress about before flying with kids. And honestly, some of them mattered a lot less than I thought they would.
After more than 150 between international and domestic flights with our two very active boys, here are a few things I’ve gradually stopped worrying about quite so much:
Strict sleep schedules
Sometimes they nap at strange times. Sometimes they refuse to nap at all. We still try our best, but I’ve learned that travel days are just different. We try to adjust as soon as we land and get back to their routine as best as we can.
Too much screen time on flights
At home, we are mindful about it. On a 12-hour flight? Let's just say survival mode rules apply a little more generously. I try to pack lots of activities to alternate with screen time, but have otherwise let go of the guilt!
What other passengers think
This one took time. But most people are far more understanding than I expected, especially when they can tell you’re trying.
After one of our worst flights ever, a complete stranger told me:
“You did a great job. I remember being in your same shoes.”
It was so kind, I still think about that sometimes.
Packing perfectly
No matter how much we prepare, there’s almost always something we forgot, underestimated, or packed “just in case” and never touched. We do our best, and give ourselves grace when things don't work out perfectly.
Over time, I think the biggest shift for me has been realizing that smoother flights usually come less from controlling everything…and more from staying flexible and pivoting when things don’t go according to plan.
Traveling with young kids can still be exhausting sometimes. But it also became a lot more enjoyable once I stopped expecting perfection from myself.
